'Ugly' by Constance Briscoe

At the beginning of June we met to discuss 'Ugly' by Constance Briscoe.

This was a tough and challenging read – the autobiographical story of a young girl growing up in an abusive family. Exams and other commitments kept some people away, but perhaps the difficult subject matter also contributed to a low turn out at the meeting? Interestingly, this book was the most borrowed one from the reading group display, but people seemed less keen to discuss it.

Those who did come felt it was a serious and heavy duty book, although there were some concerns about how the author could remember so much detail of events that happened so long ago.

We decided not to give this one a score, partly as there weren’t enough of us, and partly as it didn’t seem appropriate for this sort of book.

  1. I love reading the non- fiction books not because I enjoyed their sorrows as they have been suffered terribly by their kin ones and I feel like I’m in better condition than them as Calum was thinking about people who read these kinds of books.

Well I didn’t read the ‘Ugly’ book but I do know the story as we discussed the story in TRB. I find this book very sad and not really sure whether I’ll be reading the ‘beyond ugly’ book as it is very emotional story.

also if the character has been in so much abuse how come she became judge in the future as normally a person in those kind of situation they would not be able to give their 100% to their studies ?

  2. I thought that the book was exaggerated and did focus more on Clare Brisoce wetting the bed (which I was not really interested about), this meant that throughout the book I was starting to get bored with the same repeating line structure. However it was a good read and I would also like to know what she did in the next chapter of her life in 'BEYOND UGLY' hopefully it will indicate more of what she does now and waht she wants to do in the future. One other point I would like to bring up is when she said that here mother left her and her sisters alone in the house, no mother in their right mind would do that, so in that case I did not belive her.
